What the Map Pack Is and Why It Matters

8 min readUpdated Apr 2, 2026

Three spots. That's all Google shows when someone searches for a business near them. If you're not in those three spots, you don't exist.

What is the Map Pack?

When someone searches "coffee near me" or "plumber in Long Beach," Google shows a box with a small map and three business listings. That's the Map Pack. It appears above the regular organic search results.

For local businesses, the Map Pack is more important than ranking #1 in organic search. Why? Because it's what people see first. And most people never scroll past it.

Why only three spots matters

If you're #4, you're invisible. There's no silver medal for being close. The customer clicks on one of the three shown businesses, or they refine their search and see three different ones.

This is why chains dominate local search. Starbucks, Subway, 7-Eleven. They have entire teams optimizing their Google Business Profiles to own all three spots in every neighborhood.

How to get into the Map Pack

Getting into the Map Pack requires four things:

  • A fully claimed and optimized Google Business Profile
  • Consistent business information across the web (name, address, phone)
  • Real customer reviews (and responses to those reviews)
  • Proper schema markup on your website

What we do differently

Most SEO agencies focus on ranking your website. We focus on getting you into the Map Pack, because that's where local customers actually click.

We optimize your Google Business Profile, build local citations, implement schema markup, and help you get (and respond to) reviews. Enterprise-level tactics at local business prices.
